WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) — A planned fight among young people escalated into a mass shooting at a North Carolina park Monday morning that left two people dead, authorities said.

The incident occurred at Leinbach Park, located near Jefferson Middle School, around 10 a.m., according to Winston-Salem police.

Details from the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation indicated that several people were shot, with two fatalities confirmed. Winston-Salem police Assistant Chief Jason Swaim reported that two juveniles had arranged to meet at the park for a fight, during which a firearm was discharged, leading to multiple injuries.

Authorities have identified numerous individuals involved in the incident, but the exact nature of each person's involvement—whether as a suspect, victim, or witness—remains under investigation.

Swaim reassured the public that nearby schools were safe and that parents could pick up their children from Jefferson Middle School.

The shooting took place in a suburban area northwest of downtown Winston-Salem, a city with a population of about 250,000, historically recognized as the home of the R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co.}
