A major explosion at a munitions factory in Bucksnort, Tennessee, has left 18 workers unaccounted for following the tragic incident on Friday. Recovery teams have acknowledged the grim reality that no survivors are expected to be found, as confirmed by Humphreys County Sheriff Chris Davis during a news conference.
Authorities are still investigating the cause of the explosion, which occurred at a facility dedicated to the manufacture of explosives, located roughly 56 miles southwest of Nashville. Sheriff Davis expressed the increasing devastation felt as more details emerge from the scene.
As recovery efforts continue, over 300 state and local first responders are involved in the search for victims, with an overwhelming sadness pervading the community. As we get into this, we find it even more devastating than we thought initially, Davis stated. The FBI and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms are assisting with the situation, including the identification of victims through rapid DNA testing.
Ann Myers, a local resident, described the harrowing experience of being jolted awake by the explosion, initially fearing for her family's safety. Similarly, Justin Stover, whose property borders the facility, detailed the violent shaking of his house and the ensuing smoke cloud that emerged from the site. Residents as far as 15 miles away reported hearing the blast, illustrating the explosion's significant impact.
The plant's operator, Accurate Energetic Systems (AES), has suspended its operations, and the recovery efforts have transitioned from rescue to mourning, as families of the missing await news. According to reports, there was a previous explosion at the same facility in 2014, and the community is now grappling with the tragic loss of lives and livelihoods.
