Three people died and 15 more were injured after powerful waves battered the popular Spanish holiday island of Tenerife. A woman was pulled into the ocean near the Puerto de la Cruz resort, and a man died at Santa Cruz de Tenerife, according to emergency services. A third man was found deceased in the ocean near a beach in Granadilla.
Emergency services have advised the public to avoid coastal paths and refrain from taking pictures and videos of the turbulent seas, as adverse weather conditions persist. Rescue operations included an airlift for a man who fell into the water at La Guancha, who was later pronounced dead at the hospital. Another man drowned after being found floating near a beach at El Cabezo.
In Puerto de la Cruz, over ten people were swept out to sea during the tidal surge, with three suffering serious injuries. A local waiter, known only as Pedro, described how he jumped into the water to help those in distress, managing to save three individuals. Sadly, he could not save the woman who perished shortly after he reached her.
Eyewitnesses reported chaos as people attempted to capture the dramatic waves, with warnings being ignored. Officials have heightened alerts for coastal hazards as conditions are likely to worsen, with swells predicted to reach two to four meters. Both tourists and locals are urged to exercise extreme caution.
