BEAUFORT, S.C. — A harrowing mass shooting erupted early Sunday at Willie’s Bar and Grill on St. Helena Island, claiming the lives of four individuals and injuring at least 20 others, as reported by local authorities. The scene was chaotic as sheriff’s deputies responded to the scene, finding victims suffering from gunshot wounds amidst a large crowd.
According to the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office, multiple victims and witnesses sought refuge in nearby businesses as the shots rang out. In a statement posted on X, officials expressed their condolences: “This is a tragic and difficult incident for everyone. We ask for your patience as we continue to investigate this incident. Our thoughts are with all of the victims and their loved ones.”
Among the injured, four were reported to be in critical condition and receiving treatment at local hospitals. As the investigation unfolds, officials have yet to release the identities of the victims. The property, owned by Willie Turral Food Services, was hosting a Battery Creek High School alumni tailgate event at the time of the shooting.
Congresswoman Nancy Mace shared her sorrow on social media, stating, “COMPLETELY HEARTBROKEN to learn about the devastating shooting in Beaufort County. Our prayers are with the victims, their families, and everyone impacted by this horrific act of violence.”
