Nine people were injured, one critically, after a car crashed into a crowd during a demolition derby in southeastern Australia, police said.
The car had been taking part in a race in the town of Walcha on Saturday night when it drove through a fence and hit the grandstand, New South Wales police reported.
The race, part of the annual Walcha Motorcycle Rally, featured a demolition derby, a motorsport event where drivers collide vehicles.
Police stated the injured bystanders' ages ranged from 20 to 75, with the critically injured being a 54-year-old man. The investigation into the incident is currently ongoing.
Authorities revealed the 27-year-old driver of the car was involved in a prior collision on the track before veering into the crowd.
The Walcha Council expressed their shock about the event in a statement on Facebook and committed to cooperating with authorities to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
Brendan Moylan, MP for Northern Tablelands, praised emergency responders for their professional response, offering thoughts for those affected. Former Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce voiced similar sentiments, noting the tragic turn during a celebrated event.
The Walcha Motorcycle Rally promotes itself as a grassroots gathering for motorcycle enthusiasts, making the incident all the more poignant.
