Temperatures hit record levels in western Europe

A brutal heatwave is setting record temperatures across western Europe, with major cities such as Nice reaching 30–35 °C (86–95 °F).
Since the 18th of June, France has recorded 40 deaths linked to the heat; many were drownings that occurred during the intense summer rush.

European governments have rolled out heat‑alert measures across the region, including restricting late‑afternoon outdoor activities, deploying cooling centres, and issuing public advisories on hydration and rest.

BBC’s Pierre‑Antoine Denis notes that the alert system in place in Nice is among the most stringent yet, spurring citizens to seek refuge in cooler indoor spaces during peak hours.
