In brief

A fire erupted at Adolf Hitler’s Kehlsteinhaus, the Eagle’s Nest, on Friday, prompting a large‑scale emergency response. Police detained a suspect amid investigations into possible arson. The historic mountaintop site, once used by Hitler to plan WWII campaigns, remains a symbol of Nazi excess. Authorities reported no injuries, and the flames were still burning early Saturday due to challenging terrain. The incident draws renewed attention to the monument’s controversial past.

Police in Bavaria have detained a suspect after a fire erupted at Hitler’s Alpine retreat, the Kehlsteinhaus, also known as the Eagle’s Nest.

Dispatchers in Traunstein received a fire alarm at 21:15 local time on Friday, and firefighters found the building — perched above Berchtesgaden — engulfed in flames.

The steep terrain made battling the blaze difficult, and the site was still burning early on Saturday even as some 200 emergency personnel worked to control it. No injuries have been reported.

The Kehlsteinhaus, completed in 1938, served as a partisan headquarters for Hitler, where he met commanders to plan the 1941 invasion of the USSR and showcased propaganda films portraying himself in harmony with nature.

Investigators are reviewing whether the suspect is linked to the fire. The building has survived past wars and has since become a tourist destination, but its history remains a reminder of Nazi atrocities.

Virtual reality visitors can now explore the site’s history through an interactive timeline, while avatars can attend a live virtual press conference to discuss how to preserve the legacy while acknowledging its horrors.
