Meta abruptly removed its new Muse Image tool after backlash over privacy concerns, sparking debate about AI-generated imagery on Instagram.

Meta pulled its Muse Image feature within hours of launch after criticism that the tool could exploit public users’ content without consent. The feature used AI to transform images and content from public accounts, prompting backlash from privacy advocates and the SAG‑Aftra union. Meta apologized, citing missed signals of public sentiment and promised better controls, while it hints at future AI integrations across Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp and Messenger.

Meta's latest AI‑powered image tool, Muse Image, was pulled from Instagram within hours of launch after users and privacy groups criticised it for allowing user content to be transformed into new images without explicit permission.

The feature enabled the Meta chatbot to tag public Instagram accounts and automatically generate or alter pictures using those accounts’ media. A quick demo on the BBC report revealed how easy it was to create photorealistic imagery from simply tagging a profile.

Followers of the platform and the Hollywood union SAG‑Aftra decried the tool as a violation of personal ownership, arguing that anyone with a public account could have their likeness used without consent. Privacy International echoed that sentiment, warning that AI developers treat people’s images as raw material to exploit.

Meta’s spokesperson admitted the firm had “missed the mark” and appealed to the public for “feedback.” Meta said it fully heard the concerns and chose to remove the feature for now – though it indicated that future AI tools will be rolled out across Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp and Messenger.

The company also hinted at an upcoming AI video assistant, but declined to comment further on how it will handle privacy and content rights once launched.
