A New York judge has ruled that a gun and writings found in Luigi Mangione's backpack after his arrest in 2024 will be admissible in his state murder trial concerning the death of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. Judge Gregory Carro made the ruling on Monday, stating that while the aforementioned evidence can be presented, other items, such as a magazine, cellphone, passport, wallet, and computer chip uncovered during a search at a Pennsylvania McDonald's, will be suppressed due to their retrieval being part of an 'improper and warrantless search.'

Mangione is accused of shooting and killing Thompson on a Manhattan street in December 2024. Following the incident, he was arrested in Altoona, Pennsylvania, after a nationwide manhunt. Carro noted that some questioning of Mangione by officers at the fast-food outlet would also be inadmissible due to not adhering to proper procedures.

Despite some evidence being pushed out, the prosecution will be able to introduce key pieces of evidence, including the murder weapon and Mangione's personal writings, in what is expected to be a contentious trial slated to begin in September.
