American rapper Kanye West has announced the postponement of an upcoming concert in Marseille, France until further notice.
This decision comes a week after this summer's Wireless Festival - which West had been scheduled to headline - was cancelled following the UK government's decision to block him from entering the country.
French media reports that Interior Minister Laurent Nunez was looking to ban the June 11 gig. An unnamed source close to Nunez stated that the minister was highly determined to prohibit the event.
For the last several years, West has caused outrage for a string of antisemitic, racist, and pro-Nazi comments.
After much thought and consideration, it is my sole decision to postpone my show in Marseille, France until further notice,” West said in a post on X early Wednesday.
In a follow-up statement, the rapper expressed his desire to mend relations with his audience, stating, I know it takes time to understand the sincerity of my commitment to make amends. I take full responsibility for what's mine but I don't want to put my fans in the middle of it. My fans are everything to me. Looking forward to the next shows.
West was scheduled to perform at the Wireless Festival in London and the Marseille concert as part of a European tour this summer.
As of Wednesday, West's official website still listed upcoming performances across multiple European countries, including Turkey, the Netherlands, Italy, Spain, and Portugal. He was also set to perform in New Delhi, India, in late May.
However, as per reports, Nunez is exploring all possibilities to prohibit West from performing, although further details remain unconfirmed.
On the day the Wireless Festival was cancelled, the UK Home Office informed the BBC that West had made an application to travel to the UK via an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA).
Visitors to the UK require an ETA if they do not need a visa for short stays or do not have UK immigration status. The government stated that the refusal was based on the grounds that West's presence would not be conducive to the public good.
In past incidents, West has faced backlash for his inflammatory statements, including a notorious declaration to go 'death con 3 on Jewish people' and expressing admiration for Adolf Hitler on various platforms.
Despite the controversies, West has been working to regain his reputation, issuing a public apology while declaring, I am not a Nazi or an antisemite. I love Jewish people,” attributing his erratic behavior to his mental health struggles.
