Iowa Shooting Claims Six Lives, Suspected Relative Found Dead

On Monday, a fatal shooting in Muscatine, Iowa left six people dead, including two students, two school district employees, and another adult. Authorities say two of the deceased were students, but remain unnamed.

Police identified the suspect, 52-year‑old Ryan Willis McFarland of Muscatine, as a relative who allegedly carried out the killings before turning to self‑harm. The officer, Anthony Kies, said McFarland was found on a city trail and died while speaking with police.

The city of around 24,000 lies roughly 50 miles southeast of Cedar Rapids, and police retrieved four of the victims at a local residence.

Superintendent Clint Christopher offered condolences and said the school’s counseling services would be available next day. He also confirmed that two additional victims were district employees.

Police Chief Kies announced a community vigil on Tuesday evening to release further victim details, including ages, while remaining tight on motive at this time.

This event, the sixth family mass killing of the year, places Muscatine among the most affected Iowa communities, according to criminologist James Alan Fox.
