Family Urges Answers After Nolan Wells’ Tragic Death on Horn Island

The 18‑year‑old from Jackson County was last seen on a boating trip with friends on the morning of July 4, near Horn Island. He was reported missing when he failed to return that evening and was found dead in the water on July 6.

Conflicting Accounts Raise Questions

Civil‑rights attorney Ben Crump, who has taken on the family’s case, says that witness statements in the community differ on whether Wells had left the island with the group or stayed behind on the island. “They [the family] have serious, unanswered questions about the circumstances that left Nolan alone on the island and about how he died,” Crump told CBS Mornings.

Wells’ mother, Christine Wonsley, was the first to call the local authorities. She described him as a “happy‑go‑lucky kid” who was told by his coach that he had a bright future ahead.

Official Findings

The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office stated that no foul play was suspected in the death. The agency called for anyone who had been on or near Horn Island on July 4 to come forward and submit any original, unedited videos or photos that could clarify what happened to Wells.

An initial autopsy was performed early in the week, but the results are still pending. Coroner Bruce Lynd confirmed that the body belonged to Nolan Wells by matching dental records.

The Dangers of Horn Island

The National Park Service described Horn Island as lacking basic amenities: no staff, drinking water, shelter, facilities or communication—making any overnight stay inherently risky.

Wells’ father, Elmore Wonsley, stated, “That’s not in his character.” He underscored the family’s conviction that his son would not have chosen to remain alone on the isolated island.
