A flash flood in the Budhi Gandaki River has swept away four bridges, almost twenty houses and a hydropower construction camp in the Gorkha district of central Nepal. The Army report said 49 people were rescued, but five remain missing.
Witnesses attribute the sudden deluge to a landslide upstream, which destabilised the riverbanks and released a torrent of water and debris onto the valley floor. Footings of the abandoned hydropower project were partly submerged, jeopardising future power generation plans.
This disaster follows the severe floods that swept Tibet‑border towns two months ago, which destroyed thousands of homes, crippled critical energy infrastructure and left many dead or missing. The government and relief agencies are now engaged in search and rescue, as well as damage assessment and reconstruction planning.
