In brief

Federal agents conducted a pre‑dawn raid on Representative Ilhan Omar’s Washington DC home on 12 October, seizing more than 15 items, including phones and notebooks. The congresswoman told reporters that the search and the subsequent subpoenas against family members have forced her to abandon the house for safety. Omar decried the action as an intimidation tactic, calling it an “outrageous abuse of power” and a weaponisation of law enforcement. The investigation, whose details remain unclear, has drawn criticism from former President Barack Obama and backlash from President Donald Trump, who suggested Omar was a “disaster.”

Local news on Thursday revealed a federal raid on Representative Ilhan Omar’s Washington DC residence early Friday morning. Agents sealed the home, surveying rooms and collecting a range of personal items, from cell phones to notebooks, for a criminal investigation that the Justice Department has not yet publicised.

When asked about the impact of the raid, Omar explained that she—along with her children—can no longer safely occupy the house. She cited the death threats she routinely receives and the exposure of her address as reasons for leaving the property.

The raid began around 6:00 a.m. Eastern, with a group of agents arriving to “pound on the door.” Omar told reporters the team “conducted themselves in a decent way,” but the intrusion, lasting roughly five hours, disrupted her family’s routine and caused significant distress.

Agents seized fifteen to twenty items, including Omar’s and her husband’s early‑adventure camera and several smartphones. Additional subpoenas have targeted family members, further intensifying the interrogation.

Omar immediately blasted the investigation as a misuse of federal power, calling it an intimidation tactic against a political opponent. She echoed criticism from former President Barack Obama, who described the probe as “so appalling.”

President Trump, however, has dismissed involvement in the probe, claiming it was “nothing to do with me.” Omar remains unapologetic, asserting that the investigation is part of a broader political push‑back against her.

The scandal illustrates the continued volatility surrounding the representation of immigrant‑born members in Congress, with the raid’s allegations calling attention to questions over citizenship status and law enforcement use of power.
