In brief

Police in New South Wales have opened an inquiry into the production of Married at First Sight Australia following a complaint that private information may have been shared with a cast member. The investigation follows previous BBC findings that contestants were not informed of partners’ criminal histories, drawing criticism from Australia’s media watchdog. The UK version of the programme has also faced scrutiny after allegations of abuse surfaced, leading to an Ofcom investigation. Endemol Shine Australia has yet to comment while the police probe moves forward.

Police in New South Wales have opened an inquiry into the production of Married at First Sight Australia, after a complaint that private information might have been shared in an inappropriate way with a cast member. The investigation follows a report of “inappropriate content” being circulated.

Channel Nine said it was aware of the police inquiry and directed all questions to the production company, Endemol Shine Australia. The broadcaster added that any references should be directed to the producers.

This marks another chapter in a series of controversies surrounding the show. Earlier this year, a BBC investigation found that several contestants had not been informed of former partners’ criminal records, prompting criticism from Australia’s media watchdog.

The UK version of the programme, also hit by a BBC Panorama report in May, has faced similar scrutiny, with allegations of abuse and assault from former brides leading to an Ofcom investigation.

A spokesperson for the New South Wales Police Force stated that on 24 August officers in the South Sydney area began an investigation after receiving a complaint about content sharing. They indicated the matter would be referred to Western Australia Police, who have not yet confirmed receipt of the referral.

Endemol Shine Australia has yet to respond to repeated requests for comment. Cast members continue to call for improved background checks and transparent communication regarding potential partner history.

According to industry news website TV Blackbox, a male cast member on the current series lodged a formal complaint after producers allegedly shared personal details with his on‑screen bride.
