Russia and Ukraine have agreed to a truce for Orthodox Easter, with Vladimir Putin announcing that Russian troops will cease fire 'in all directions' this weekend.
This declaration from Moscow follows Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s calls for a ceasefire, which had previously been ignored by the Kremlin. Putin has ordered the truce to begin at 16:00 local time on Saturday, April 11, extending through Easter Sunday. He stated he expected Ukraine to 'follow the example' set by Russia while also preparing his forces for potential provocations.
This approach from Russia is likely to provoke a stern response from Ukrainians. Zelensky quickly responded to the announcement by stating that Ukraine is 'ready for symmetrical steps' towards peace. 'People need an Easter free from threats and real movement toward peace,' he added, suggesting that Russia has an opportunity not to return to strikes post-Easter.
Earlier this week, Zelensky had requested the United States to propose a holiday weekend truce to Moscow as an initial step. The proposal aims to provide a much-needed pause for soldiers stationed on the lengthy frontline in eastern Ukraine, who often face relentless drone attacks.
A ceasefire would also afford civilians across the country some relief, breaking the constant tension from air raid sirens and ongoing Russian missile strikes that continue to claim lives. Recently, incidents in Nikopol and Zhytomyr have resulted in civilian casualties, illustrating the urgent need for cessation of hostilities.
Moreover, while many Ukrainians may harbor doubts about the truce's success, having witnessed prior failures in ceasefire agreements with Russia, hope remains that this could mark a transition to more stable conditions. Historically, Russia has declared 'energy truces' and temporary halts to strikes, only to relaunch attacks shortly thereafter, leaving many skeptical about the sincerity of such promises.
In response to the escalating tensions, Ukraine has also adopted a more aggressive stance, increasing its drone attacks on Russian energy assets. With both nations firmly entrenched in their positions, the coming days will be critical in determining whether this truce will hold amidst deep-seated suspicions and the heavy shadow of past experiences.
