LELAND, Miss. (AP) — Local officials and law enforcement are urgently requesting the public's assistance in identifying individuals connected to a devastating mass shooting that left six people dead in Leland, Mississippi.

A press conference is scheduled for Thursday afternoon at Leland City Hall, where local police, along with representatives from the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation and the FBI, will provide updates regarding the search for suspects.

“We are actively looking for information regarding possible suspects,” stated Leland Mayor John Lee.

Several individuals have already faced charges of capital murder following the shooting incident last Friday, which also resulted in over a dozen injuries during a community event that was meant to celebrate homecoming weekend following a high school football game.

The FBI's Jackson Field Office has been disseminating images of those they wish to question in connection with the mass shooting.

“It feels surreal right now,” Lee reflected, emphasizing the heavy toll on families in mourning who have yet to see justice or closure following the tragedy. “Funerals are still being arranged as we speak.”

This incident has caused a profound sense of disbelief within the community. “This sort of violence is unprecedented for our area,” he added, highlighting the nature of the event, traditionally a joyous occasion where families come together in the streets.

Notably, this shooting is part of a disturbing trend across Mississippi, where last weekend also saw multiple other shootings in different towns all during homecoming celebrations. The motivation behind the Leland shooting remains unclear, although the FBI suggested it may have arisen from a conflict involving several individuals.

The horrifying nature of the event was underscored by eyewitness accounts, with one witness, Camish Hopkins, recalling the chaos and destruction wrought by the gunfire: “It was the most horrific scene I’d ever seen.”
