NEW YORK (AP) — Pluck eyebrows. Buy less conspicuous shoes. Take a bus or a train west toward Cincinnati and St. Louis. Move around late at night. Stay away from surveillance cameras.
A to-do list and travel plans found during Luigi Mangione’s arrest and revealed in court this week shed new light on the steps he may have taken — or planned to take — to avoid capture after UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson’s killing last year.
“Keep momentum, FBI slower overnight,” said one note. “Change hat, shoes, pluck eyebrows,” said another.
Included were a hand-drawn map and survival tactics displayed during the pretrial hearing alongside Mangione’s aim to prevent prosecutors from utilizing evidence seized during his Dec. 9, 2024, arrest at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania. Police also revealed excerpts of body-worn camera footage from his arrest.
When police apprehended Mangione, they found notes detailing an escape plan alongside a 9 mm handgun, a loaded magazine, and a silencer — indicating a direct link to Thompson’s murder.
Mangione’s defense team did not challenge the authenticity of the notes or the origins of the gun and other items seized. However, they are contesting the legality of the search that led to the evidence being found without a warrant.
The multitude of notes suggests that Mangione’s brief stop in Altoona was a calculated move. One note advised checking for “red eyes” on potential escape routes, which connected various cities like Pittsburgh and Indianapolis.
Notably, on December 4, 2024, Thompson was shot while heading to a Manhattan investor conference. Surveillance footage captured the dramatic scene, leading to a nationwide manhunt for the suspect, eventually linking Mangione to the crime.
The pretrial hearings address both state and federal charges against Mangione, who has pleaded not guilty and faces the potential of capital punishment. As the hearings progress, the unsettling revelations from Mangione's notes paint a disturbing picture of premeditated actions following a high-profile murder.
