CHICAGO — A troubling scene unfolded at the Rayito de Sol Spanish Immersion Early Learning Center in Chicago on Wednesday when an employee was detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) during peak drop-off hours. Eyewitnesses reported that the employee rushed into the facility just as officers arrived, and was subsequently detained between the glass entry doors.
The incident, described by Alderman Matt Martin as highly unusual, coincided with the Trump administration's aggressive immigration enforcement tactics that have resulted in over 3,000 arrests in the Chicago area alone since early September. Witnesses noted that officers displayed overwhelming force, with at least one agent wearing tactical gear.
Following the incident, which sparked immediate outrage among parents, the preschool closed for the day. Families expressed their shock and anger, pointing out that the arrested individual was a beloved teacher. Esmeralda Rosales, a parent, rushed to the school upon hearing the news, stating the teachers are 'the nicest, kindest people' who don't deserve such treatment. Other parents echoed her sentiments, highlighting the trauma inflicted on the children by witnessing such actions.
The incident raises significant concerns about the treatment of educators and the implications of immigration enforcement within vulnerable communities. ICE and the Department of Homeland Security have yet to comment formally on the incident.
