This article contains descriptions of sexual abuse and violence which some readers may find distressing.
Two Palestinian men have told the BBC they personally experienced the kind of beatings and sexual abuse highlighted in recent reports into the treatment of prisoners in Israeli detention.
The United Nations Committee against Torture said last month that it was deeply concerned about reports indicating a de facto state policy of organised and widespread torture and ill treatment of Palestinian detainees in Israeli jails. It said the allegations had gravely intensified after the Hamas-led attacks on Israel on 7 October 2023.
Reports by rights organizations have detailed what they say is systematic abuse. Israel denies all allegations, yet rights groups argue that the fury within the country following the October attacks has fostered a culture of impunity for prison guards, particularly against detainees affiliated with Hamas.
One detainee, Sami al-Saei, recounted severe sexual abuse during his 16-month detention under administrative detention. He described being raped with a baton by multiple guards while also enduring physical beatings.
Another former detainee, who wished to remain anonymous, detailed a different form of sexual violence, claiming guards forced a police dog to sexually humiliate him during his detention.
Israeli officials have stated that their prison services operate within legal boundaries, but numerous rights groups assert that abuse has been rampant.
In a recent report presented to the UN, five Israeli human rights organizations indicated a significant rise in torture and abuse incidents in detention facilities, attributing these acts to a broader policy targeting Palestinian individuals.
As allegations persist, the Israeli government continues to reject claims of systematic abuse, presenting potential challenges for the international human rights community seeking accountability for alleged crimes in the region.
Such cases, alongside growing tensions in the region, are likely to reignite discussions concerning the treatment of prisoners and human rights standards within Israel's judicial system.
