At least thirty people were killed when a mound of rubbish from a major waste site collapsed onto homes in Conakry’s Dar‑es‑Salem area after a bout of heavy rain overnight. A further twenty‑two people suffered injuries, six of them seriously, according to official statements.
The government deployed significant resources, including military personnel, at about 02:00 local time to search for survivors. Search efforts have involved excavators combing through the rubble as residents gather to watch the operation.
Prime Minister Mamadou Oury Bah visited the scene to assess the situation and supervise the rescue work. Local community leader Lancine Sylla expressed grave concern, noting that 18 bodies were already recovered but doubts a further toll is imminent.
The incident, the worst of its kind since a landslide at the same site killed ten people in 2017, highlights ongoing challenges with waste management and urban safety in Guinea’s growing capital.
