A fierce wildfire rapidly approaching Reno, Nevada, has forced authorities to issue evacuation orders for almost 90,000 residents. The blaze, which first sparked on Saturday, has already burned over 10,500 acres and injured six people, including three firefighters. Governor Joe Lombardo declared a state of emergency in Washoe County and dispatched the National Guard, adding helicopter support to firefighting efforts. Schools are closed, roads are shut, and residents are urged to stay alert and heed local guidance.

Tens of thousands of residents have received evacuation orders as an expanding wildfire threatens the outskirts of Reno. Around 42,000 people were told to leave immediately, with an additional 45,000 urged to prepare.

Since first reporting on Saturday morning, the fire has injured six people, including three emergency responders. High winds and unpredictable weather have accelerated its spread.

Governor Joe Lombardo declared a state of emergency in Washoe County, activating the National Guard to assist firefighting and law‑enforcement efforts. “This is an active and rapidly evolving situation and I urge everyone in the affected areas to remain vigilant and follow the direction of local officials,” Lombardo stated.

The blaze, caused by human activity, ignited at 11:15 local time (18:15 GMT) Saturday. By Sunday evening it had burnt roughly 10,500 acres and remained 0% contained.

Approximately 13,700 homes fell within the evacuation zone, with two shelters set up for displaced residents. Schools across Washoe County closed for Monday, except one, and mass road closures were implemented.
