Avalanche Strikes Uttarakhand: Four Confirmed Dead, Search for Missing Continues
Tragedy in India as avalanche claims lives and leaves many missing in remote district
In the picturesque but perilous landscapes of Uttarakhand, an avalanche has struck, resulting in the loss of four lives and leaving several workers missing. The avalanche occurred on Friday in the village of Mana, located near the Tibetan border, where road construction workers were overwhelmed by falling snow and debris.
Rescue operations commenced immediately, with around 50 individuals successfully pulled from under the snow. However, as the Indian army reports, four people succumbed to their injuries. Helicopters have been brought in to assist in the search for an additional five individuals who remain missing amid the treacherous winter weather.
Uttarakhand's Chief Minister, Pushkar Singh Dhami, emphasized the government's dedication to providing comprehensive assistance during this critical time. "Our rescue teams are continuously engaged in relief efforts following the avalanche that impacted a Border Roads Organisation camp," Dhami stated. He reassured the public that all necessary measures are being implemented to aid the affected.
Recent footage revealed rescuers trudging through deep snow, carrying victims on stretchers, demonstrating the treacherous conditions they face. Eyewitness Gaurav Kunwar, a former village council member, described the region as a temporary site for laborers and military personnel during winter months, affirming that no permanent residents reside there.
Compounding the danger, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings for heavy rainfall and snow in Uttarakhand and nearby regions, as well as orange alerts for impending snowfall in various districts of Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir, raising concerns for further incidents in the already affected areas.
