Eyewitnesses captured dramatic footage of a wall of mud and water demolishing buildings and sweeping through the area. Officials fear that dozens may have been trapped beneath the rubble as the torrent surged without warning.

The extreme weather event occurred around 1:30 PM local time, significantly swelling the Kheerganga river and unleashing torrents of murky water onto the hilly terrain, inundating roads, businesses, and residential structures. Dharali, a tourist hotspot known for its hotels and restaurants, has borne the worst brunt of the disaster. Locals attempted to warn bystanders, but the rapid onset of the flood left little time for escape.

Reports indicate that the historic Kalpkedar temple has also suffered damage as it remains submerged in debris. Furthermore, the volume of sludge from the Kheerganga has obstructed the course of the main river Bhagirathi, creating an artificial lake that threatens to flood surrounding areas, prompting alarm for downstream towns and villages.

Army personnel on the scene have issued warnings to keep clear of the rising waters, as the region anticipates further rainfall, hampering rescue operations. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences through social media, underscoring the government's commitment to support the victims and facilitate relief efforts.

Communication challenges have plagued the area, noted Prashant Arya, the senior-most official in Uttarkashi, but rescue teams continue to work tirelessly in searching for survivors amidst chaotic conditions. Various injured individuals are reportedly receiving medical care at an army facility in Harsil, as authorities navigate the complexities of this natural disaster.
