Elite Sumo Wrestling Returns to London After 34 Years

The much-anticipated return of elite sumo wrestling to London promises a thrilling five-day event beginning October 15, 2025, marking the first competition hosted by the Japan Sumo Association in Britain in over three decades.

Sumo wrestling is set to captivate fans once again in London, as the Grand Sumo Tournament takes place at the iconic Royal Albert Hall starting October 15, 2025. This event is significant as it marks the first time the premier sumo organization will hold a tournament in the UK since 1991, when it made history as the first competition outside Japan.

Anticipation is building among both British and Japanese organizers, who are optimistic about the audience's enthusiasm for the event. "Back in 1991, the spectators were excited to watch sumo,” expressed Nobuyoshi Hakkaku, chairman of the Japan Sumo Association, during a recent press conference in London. Hakkaku, who was also the champion of the 1991 basho (tournament), reminisced about the pressures he faced, particularly regarding his English speech at the event’s conclusion.

While there have been other sumo events abroad, such as in New York City, they were not coordinated by the Japan Sumo Association and did not exclusively feature top-tier wrestlers from Japan. The Grand Sumo Tournament in London is poised to deliver an authentic sumo experience, showcasing the sport's most skilled athletes and drawing return visitors and new fans alike.
