**Influencer's Tragic Death Highlights Rising Violence Against Women in Mexico**

Valeria Márquez, a 23-year-old TikTok influencer, was shot and killed during a livestream at her workplace, bringing attention to the alarming issue of violence against women in Mexico.

 

On May 14, 2025, Valeria Márquez, a 23-year-old influencer with a significant following on TikTok, was tragically shot and killed while livestreaming from a beauty salon in Zapopan, Jalisco. At the time, she was engaging with her audience of over 113,000 followers when two men arrived on a motorbike. According to Denis Rodríguez, spokesperson for the Jalisco State Prosecutor's Office, one of the assailants entered the salon, clearly seeking out Márquez.

In a chilling exchange, the masked individual asked her directly, “Are you Valeria?” to which she replied affirmatively. Without hesitation, he produced a firearm and fatally shot her before fleeing on the motorbike.

Witnesses reported that Márquez was holding a pink stuffed pig in her lap as she streamed, an image that has become hauntingly symbolic of the tragedy. A video circulating online shows her interaction before the horrific moment, indicating the shocking nature of the event.

The prosecutor’s office confirmed that the TikTok account associated with Márquez was deleted shortly after the incident, but the footage has fueled public outrage and concern. As investigators work on gathering evidence, including reviewing surveillance footage and her social media presence, no suspects have been identified yet.

Initial inquiries revealed that earlier in the day, the individuals had visited the salon under the pretense of delivering a gift for Márquez, suggesting that they may not have known her personally since they needed to inquire her identity. This incident underscores the deep-seated issue of violence against women in Mexico, highlighting societal challenges that women face amid rising criminal activities.
