The Mahakumbh Mela attracts millions of pilgrims to Prayagraj for spiritual cleansing.
In a dazzling display of faith and devotion, Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh has begun hosting the Mahakumbh Mela, the largest religious festival on the planet. Over the span of six weeks, it is anticipated that around 400 million devotees from across the globe will converge in this sacred city to immerse themselves in the waters of the Sangam, where the Ganges, Yamuna, and the mythic Saraswati rivers meet. The belief is that a dip in these holy waters cleanses them of sins and punishes bad karma.
In preparation for the monumental influx of visitors, local authorities have created an extensive tent city, sprawling over an area of 4,000 hectares beside the rivers. As the pilgrims arrive in vibrant processions, they engage in singing and dancing, celebrating their spiritual journey.
Photojournalist Ankit Srinivas captures the essence of the festival, highlighting scenes including the arrival of countless pilgrims, ritualistic performances by ash-smeared followers, and the remarkable appearance of naked Naga sadhus—ascetics known for their extreme devotion who plunge into the frigid river waters.
Construction of the tent city commenced in September of the previous year, showcasing the dedication and effort by officials to accommodate the vast influx of spiritual seekers. The vibrant festival, which represents a powerful annual pilgrimage, will run until February 26. Many Hindu holy men and spiritual leaders are expected to remain present for the entire 45-day period, beckoning devotees to join them in this unique celebration of faith and togetherness.
