U.S. Authorities Capture Suspected Terrorist with Ties to Sikh Separatist Movement
Harpreet Singh, a fugitive wanted in India for a grenade attack, was arrested in Sacramento by the FBI.
The FBI announced on Thursday that they have apprehended Harpreet Singh, a man implicated in terrorist activities in India, during his unlawful presence in the United States. Singh was tracked down in Sacramento after evading law enforcement by using disposable phones and encrypted applications. He is suspected of having affiliations with Pakistan's intelligence agency and a Sikh separatist group.
In January, India’s National Investigation Agency issued a cash reward for Singh's capture concerning a grenade attack on a retired police officer in Chandigarh last September. Authorities accuse Singh of supplying support—logistical assistance, funds, and ammunition—to members of Babbar Khalsa International, a designated terrorist organization.
In recent times, India has issued numerous warrants against over ten Indian nationals residing in the U.S. Singh’s arrest represents a significant moment in ongoing international efforts to combat terrorism, especially regarding a group linked to separatist ambitions.
The arrest comes amidst heightened tensions regarding India's pursuit of individuals it deems a threat to national security, including others like Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, who faces accusations of orchestrating plots in New York.
