Wildfires, Migrant Journeys, and Cultural Celebrations: Highlights of the Week

A roundup of significant global events captured through striking imagery.

This week's selection of impactful photographs showcases wildfires in Los Angeles, a migrant's birth at sea, political turmoil in Venezuela, and vibrant cultural festivals around the world.

As wildfires rage across Los Angeles, California, the blazes have resulted in at least 10 fatalities and the destruction of thousands of structures, necessitating mass evacuations. A poignant image captures a firefighter combating the Eaton fire in Altadena. The Pacific Palisades fire has been deemed the most devastating in Los Angeles' history, a situation exacerbated by high winds and low rainfall, with experts linking the increased frequency of these fires to climate change.

Amidst this devastation, a remarkable story emerged from the Mediterranean as a baby was born aboard a crowded migrant dinghy making its way from Africa to the Canary Islands. The Spanish coastguard shared a touching photograph of the newborn boy, saved alongside his mother and numerous other migrants.

In Venezuela, political tension escalated when María Corina Machado, the opposition leader, was briefly detained following her speech at a protest rally in Caracas. The United Nations expressed serious concerns over reports of wrongful arrests and intimidations leading up to the marches staged against President Nicolás Maduro’s controversial inauguration.

In the United States Capitol, former President Jimmy Carter lay in state following his passing at the age of 100 in December 2024. This somber tribute highlights his significant legacy.

Across the ocean, artist Luke Jerram unveiled "Helios," his latest astronomical sculpture, at the Bath Assembly Rooms in England. Meanwhile, the sacred Voodoo Festival commenced in Benin, where a devotee dances in reverence, as voodoo is recognized as an official religion practiced by about 40% of the population.

In New Orleans, revellers brought excitement to the streets, embarking on a streetcar ride as part of the Twelfth Night celebration, which heralds the onset of Carnival season.

In Luxor, Egypt, runners gathered to commemorate the 32nd Egyptian Marathon, with the majestic Queen Hatshepsut's temple in the background, as hot air balloons soared over the iconic Nile river.

Participants at the 47th Dakar Rally in Saudi Arabia showcased their skills, while in India's Srinagar, a man diligently cleaned snow-covered boats amidst fresh snowfall. Lastly, an Elvis impersonator, Alfred Vaz, eagerly boarded a train from Sydney's Central Station bound for the Parkes Elvis Festival, his excitement capturing the festive spirit of the occasion.
