Starmer's Coalition of the Willing Faces Uncertainties in Peace Push
New military and diplomatic initiatives arise as UK Prime Minister seeks stability in Ukraine.
UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer emphasized the progress made since proposing a "coalition of the willing" during his Lancaster House summit two weeks ago. He reported that US-Ukrainian relations have shifted considerably, recently culminating in a meeting in Riyadh that established a 30-day ceasefire. However, the coalition he leads remains largely undefined, facing intricate challenges in stabilizing Ukraine amidst ongoing conflict.
Starmer noted that the coalition has expanded and introduced "new commitments," although details were scarce. Following a virtual summit with 29 world leaders, he confirmed a consensus to maintain military assistance for Ukraine and impose stricter sanctions on Russia to diminish President Vladimir Putin's military capabilities. The endeavor now transitions into an "operational phase," with military leaders slated to convene in the UK the following Thursday.
Despite the building political and military momentum, significant obstacles loom. The Prime Minister was notably candid about the critical need for US military backing for any European-led initiatives, rebuffing plans without Washington's endorsement. Recently, European national security advisors, including Jonathan Powell, have been engaged in discussions in Washington, signaling pivotal talks ahead.
The pressure for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is mounting as military dynamics deteriorate, particularly around Kursk, where Ukrainian troops are reportedly holding onto diminishing territory. Although Ukraine dismisses claims of being surrounded—an assertion made by Trump—it is clear that they are under severe duress and may be losing ground.
During a visit to Kyiv late last year, Ukrainian soldiers indicated they were preserving their position in Kursk as leverage for impending negotiations. However, with peace talks stalling and Russian advances threatening their territorial integrity, the urgency for a ceasefire looms large, raising questions about the feasibility of lasting peace in these tumultuous times.
