Kyiv Faces Catastrophic Drone Assault as Putin Dismisses Trump's Peace Plea
Intense drone strikes rock Kyiv, resulting in casualties and further escalation in the ongoing conflict.
In a devastating night of drone strikes, Kyiv was the target of intense bombardment by Russian forces, claiming one life and injuring 26 others, according to official reports. On Friday morning, the skies over Ukraine's capital were cloaked in a dense haze of smoke following several hours of chaos and noise, characterized by defensive gunfire, drone hums, and large explosions. Ukrainian officials indicated that over the night, Russia launched a staggering 539 drones alongside 11 missiles, marking a new record for airstrikes.
This attack coincided with a recent phone conversation between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Trump expressed his disappointment in Putin's unwillingness to pursue peace efforts to conclude the ongoing war in Ukraine. Moscow, however, reaffirmed its commitment to persistently advance its military objectives.
Ukraine's air force reported that 72 of the 539 drones managed to evade defensive measures, breaking the previous record of 537 drones launched in a single night's assault just a week earlier. Air raid alerts echoed across Kyiv for more than eight hours, as multiple waves of aerial attacks targeted the city. The Ukrainian State Emergency Service released footage showing firefighters battling multiple fires ignited by the strikes.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky denounced this series of strikes, characterizing it as one of the most "demonstratively significant and cynical" offensives thus far in the war. Zelensky highlighted the timing of the attacks, which followed directly after the conversation between Trump and Putin, and emphasized that Russia's actions indicate its intention to prolong the conflict. He urged international allies, particularly the U.S., to escalate sanctions against Moscow.
On Friday, Zelensky and Trump engaged in a subsequent call discussing military aid to Ukraine. Zelensky remarked that it was a "very important and fruitful conversation" regarding air defense cooperation, especially crucial following Washington's decision to pause some critical weapons shipments. He underscored the need for sustained support in the face of deteriorating security and escalating airstrikes.
The overnight attacks caused extensive damage, affecting railway infrastructure and igniting fires across schools, residential buildings, and vehicles in Kyiv. Reports also indicated that the Polish consulate was damaged. In addition, strikes were reported in regions including Sumy, Kharkiv, Dnipropetrovsk, and Chernihiv, with rescuers discovering a deceased individual among the rubble in Kyiv.
In a statement from Russia’s defense ministry, the "massive strike" was depicted as retaliation against what they deemed "terrorist acts" initiated by the Ukrainian regime. Simultaneously, other incidents, such as a Ukrainian drone strike that resulted in a civilian casualty in a Russian border village, further illustrate the escalated tensions.
These assaults represent the latest developments within the protracted confrontation, which has been ongoing since Russia initiated its full-scale invasion in February 2022. After his conversation with Putin, Trump lamented the lack of advancement towards a resolution, expressing concern that Putin was not inclined to halt the aggression.
Putin's spokesperson reiterated that Russia will continue its operations until its goals in Ukraine are met, reflecting the unwavering stance of the Kremlin amidst the stalled ceasefire negotiations. Meanwhile, NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte acknowledged the need for the U.S. to maintain its defenses but called for flexibility in ensuring Ukraine also receives adequate support. Additionally, discussions between Germany and the U.S. are underway regarding the acquisition of Patriot air defense systems for Ukraine.
