Foiled Terror Plot Targets Taylor Swift's Concert in Vienna
A young Syrian has been charged in connection with a planned attack on the pop star's concert, leading to event cancellations.
A young Syrian national has been charged with supporting a foreign terrorist organization over a foiled plot to attack a Taylor Swift concert in Vienna last August. Mohamed A, identified as a juvenile by German authorities and currently not in custody, is accused of adhering to the jihadist ideology of the Islamic State (IS) and assisting another suspect in the preparations for the attack.
Concert organizers were compelled to cancel Taylor Swift's three sold-out shows just hours before the first performance at Vienna's Ernst Happel Stadium, resulting in disappointment for tens of thousands of fans attending her Eras Tour. During an investigation, authorities apprehended several individuals believed to have been motivated by IS and al-Qaeda.
The German federal public prosecutor stated that "Mohammad A has adhered since April 2024 at the latest to the ideology of the terrorist organization Islamic State (IS)." It was reported that from mid-July to August 2024, he maintained communication with an older suspect from Austria, who was orchestrating a bomb attack aimed at Swift's concert.
Around 65,000 fans had purchased tickets for the anticipated concerts on August 8-10, and Taylor Swift later expressed her deep regret over the cancellation, indicating the weight of guilt she felt. She noted her intention to focus her efforts on performances in London following the European tour.
The primary suspect, Beran A, identified as a 20-year-old from Ternitz, south of Vienna, is alleged to be part of an IS cell in eastern Austria. Authorities arrested him prior to the concerts after receiving pivotal intelligence from the CIA, which revealed that the plotters aimed to inflict mass casualties among concert attendees.
Investigators also allege that Beran A had previously intended to execute an attack in Dubai in March 2024, as part of a larger coordinated plan involving multiple IS operations. However, he reportedly opted out of that attack at the last moment.
As part of the ongoing investigation, Mohammad A faces accusations of aiding the primary suspect by translating bomb-making instructions from Arabic and facilitating connections with an IS member online. Furthermore, he purportedly supplied an oath of allegiance text for the main suspect to join the ranks of IS.
