Swedish Man Sentenced for Role in Infamous Pilot's Execution
A Swedish national faces life imprisonment for involvement in the brutal killing of a Jordanian pilot.
A court in Stockholm has sentenced 32-year-old Osama Krayem to life imprisonment for his involvement in the horrifying killing of Jordanian air force pilot Lt Moaz al-Kasasbeh, who was brutally burned alive by ISIS in 2015. Krayem, a Swedish citizen with previous convictions for participating in terror attacks in Paris and Brussels, was found guilty of committing serious war crimes and terrorist crimes related to the pilot's execution.
Lt Al-Kasasbeh was captured after his plane crashed during a mission against ISIS in Syria's Raqqa province in December 2014. His gruesome death was confirmed by Jordan following the release of a video by ISIS depicting the horrific act. Despite Krayem's denial of involvement, the court ruled that he played a vital role as an accomplice in the murder.
Judge Anna Liljenberg Gullesjo stated that Krayem helped facilitate the execution, noting his presence at the execution site in uniform, armed, and participating in the filming of the event. The court also awarded compensation of 80,000 Swedish kronor (approximately $8,200) to the victim's family.
Krayem, originally from Malmo, Sweden, reportedly traveled to Syria in September 2014 to join ISIS. He had already been sentenced to 30 years in prison for his role in the 2015 Paris attacks, which resulted in the deaths of 130 people, and later for the Brussels attacks that killed 32.
The trial has reopened emotional wounds for the al-Kasasbeh family, with Jawdat al-Kasasbeh, the pilot's brother, expressing gratitude towards Swedish authorities for pursuing justice for his brother's brutal murder.
