An alarming surge of violence linked to the Islamic State leaves dozens dead as ADF fighters target worshippers during a night vigil in Komanda.
Dozens of people have lost their lives in a tragic attack carried out by the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), an affiliate of the Islamic State, in northeastern Democratic Republic of Congo. Local sources report that approximately 20 of the victims were churchgoers participating in a night vigil held in the town of Komanda.
The grim assault reportedly involved the ADF targeting worshippers and subsequently looting and setting surrounding shops and businesses ablaze. Emerging from Uganda in the 1990s, the ADF initially voiced grievances regarding the treatment of Muslims by the Ugandan government, but has since relocated to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) where it indiscriminately attacks civilians of diverse faiths, as well as continuing its violent actions in Uganda. The group has now been integrated into the Islamic State's Central African Province, which includes other factions such as those operating in Mozambique.
Civil society coordinator Dieudonne Duranthabo, speaking to the Associated Press, indicated that the death toll may rise further. “More than 21 individuals were shot dead inside and outside [the church], and we have documented at least three charred bodies along with several homes burned. The search for more victims is ongoing,” he stated.
Local priest Father Aime Lokana Dhego reported that at least 31 members of the Eucharistic Crusade movement had been confirmed dead, with six others suffering serious injuries. He added there were reports of young individuals being kidnapped, and their whereabouts remain unknown. Reports have varied, with a UN-sponsored media source estimating 43 deaths, while an army spokesperson confirmed 10 casualties.
In response to the escalating violence from the ADF, the DRC had previously invited Ugandan troops to assist in tackling the insurgent group. Nonetheless, attacks persist in the conflict-ridden region, particularly in Ituri province, which is rich in mineral resources and has been the battleground for various armed factions for years.
