Severe Turbulence Injures Eight on Ryanair Flight Diverted to Germany
Passengers Injured Due to Weather-Related Turbulence on Flight from Berlin to Milan
Eight passengers were reportedly injured after experiencing 'severe turbulence' on a Ryanair flight that had to divert to Memmingen, Germany, on Wednesday night due to adverse weather conditions. Bavarian police confirmed that among the injured were a two-year-old child who sustained bruises and a woman with a head injury. In total, three individuals, including the child, required treatment at a local hospital, while others received care at the scene.
Ryanair acknowledged the incident, stating that the flight, which was traveling from Berlin to Milan, had safely landed at Memmingen airport at 20:44 local time (19:44 BST). The airline's captain had communicated with ground services, requesting medical assistance prior to landing. Police noted that the severe weather conditions prevented an approach to Munich Airport, leading to the diversion.
On the ground, each passenger underwent precautionary medical checks, with a total of 179 passengers and six crew members aboard. Official reports indicated that the injuries spanned ages from two to 59. In an effort to continue the journey, Ryanair arranged alternative transport to Milan for the affected passengers that night and added an extra flight for Thursday morning.
"We sincerely apologize to passengers affected by this diversion," Ryanair expressed in a statement. Safety measures and prompt emergency responses were taken to ensure the welfare of all those on board, allowing for a safe landing despite the tumultuous circumstances.
