After months of halted negotiations spurred by military actions against its nuclear facilities, Iran engaged in discussions with European diplomats to address its nuclear program. While Iran's representatives declared a commitment to continued dialogue, European powers have threatened to reimpose sanctions if progress is not made by October.

Renewed Nuclear Talks Between Iran and European Powers Amid Rising Tensions
Iran has resumed nuclear discussions with European diplomats from the UK, Germany, and France, following escalated military tensions with Israel and the United States.
Iranian diplomats held a significant meeting with representatives from the UK, Germany, and France in Istanbul, marking the first dialogue since military strikes targeted Iran's nuclear infrastructure in June. This conflict, involving Israel and the US, concluded with a brief skirmish, abruptly terminating talks aimed at restoring the nuclear deal forged in 2015.
The European trio, commonly referred to as the E3, has warned of the potential reintroduction of sanctions if no advancements are achieved in negotiations by the end of August. Kazem Gharibabadi, Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister, described the conversations as "serious, frank, and detailed," emphasizing the need for ongoing discussions regarding Iran's nuclear ambitions.
Gharibabadi previously remarked that the reactivation of sanctions would constitute an illegitimate action. The sanctions, initially lifted as part of the 2015 deal, were reintroduced after the United States withdrew under former President Donald Trump, asserting that the agreement inadequately constrained Iran's potential development of nuclear weapons.
While the thresholds of allowable nuclear activity and international inspections were defined in the earlier agreement, rising tensions led Iran to breach these agreements following the US's withdrawal. The E3 has set an October deadline for Iran to curtail its nuclear activities or face stringent sanctions.
As the meeting commenced, Rafael Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), noted Iran's willingness to resume technical discussions over its nuclear program. He stressed the importance of transparency from Iran regarding its nuclear facilities and activities.
Meanwhile, Iranian officials have urged E3 representatives to utilize this opportunity to amend their previous policies, which Iran's foreign ministry accused of exacerbating conflict by supporting US-Israeli actions. Following Israel's military operations, Iran suspended cooperation with the UN nuclear watchdog and responded to the attacks with its own military action.
In the wake of this new dialogue, stakeholders are calling for a de-escalation of military tensions. The future of nuclear arrangements remains uncertain as Iran's foreign minister expressed readiness to engage with the E3, asserting that persistent diplomacy is essential moving forward.
