An Air India passenger plane, carrying 242 individuals, tragically crashed on Thursday soon after its departure in Ahmedabad, a prominent city in Gujarat. This catastrophic event has been marked as one of India's direst aviation tragedies. According to Ahmedabad’s police commissioner, over 200 bodies have been retrieved from the site, with the airline confirming the passengers' nationalities as comprising 169 Indians, 53 Britons, seven Portuguese, and a Canadian national.
The aircraft hit a local medical college campus, leading to injuries; however, reports on whether those injured were passengers or civilians on the ground remain unclear. Witnesses and video footage depict vast clouds of black smoke emanating from the wreckage, highlighting the gravity of the situation.
Natarajan Chandrasekaran, Air India’s chairman, expressed deep condolences regarding the “tragic accident” in statements circulated by the airline’s parent company, Tata Group. As rescue efforts continue, videos shared across social media platforms vividly portray the chaos ensuing from the crash - smoke towering near the airport premises.
Firefighters are on-site, battling the flames engulfing the wreckage, while emergency workers diligently sift through debris to recover personal belongings and assist the victims. The airplane wreckage reveals part of its registration number, “VT-ANB,” as authorities work to identify the victims and manage the aftermath. Casualties' remains have been transported to Civil Hospital for formal identification.
