Israeli Gunfire Claims Lives of 30 Palestinians Seeking Aid in Gaza
At least 30 people are reported dead amid escalating violence as Palestinians await humanitarian assistance in Gaza.
Israeli gunfire has reportedly killed at least 30 Palestinians who were waiting for humanitarian aid in northern Gaza, as reported by the Hamas-run civil defense agency. This latest violence occurred while civilians sought assistance amid dire circumstances, with around 300 additional individuals reported wounded according to a spokesperson for the civil defense.
The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) acknowledged firing "warning shots" when Gazans congregated around aid trucks near the Zikim crossing. However, they stated they were "not aware of any casualties" linked to IDF fire. Mohammed Abu Salmiya, director of al-Shifa Hospital, indicated that his facility had received 35 bodies following the incident.
Reports from the hospital subsequently increased the death toll to at least 48, as confirmed by the Associated Press. In a separate incident, six Palestinians were killed near a Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) aid distribution center in Rafah on the same day, but the GHF denied any occurrences of fatalities at their sites.
An IDF statement noted that armed forces had warned away a gathering deemed a potential threat, stating that shots were fired from a significant distance. Initial reviews indicated discrepancies between reported casualties and IDF records.
The UN human rights office has highlighted a grim trend, stating that over 1,000 Palestinians have lost their lives while attempting to access aid since the onset of hostilities in May. Additionally, reports indicate that malnutrition has claimed the lives of over 150 people, including a disturbing number of children.
As the humanitarian crisis deepens, global food security experts, supported by the UN, have declared that the "worst-case scenario of famine" is unfolding in Gaza. Despite an announcement of "tactical pauses" by Israel to facilitate aid delivery, many European nations and UN officials have disputed claims that there are no restrictions on aid flow.
UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres urged the need for a substantial increase in aid to Gaza, emphasizing that the flow of essential resources such as food, water, medicine, and fuel should be unimpeded. “This nightmare must end,” he declared.
In response to the worsening situation, US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff is scheduled to visit Israel to address humanitarian concerns. His visit comes amidst growing announcements from Canada, France, and the UK to acknowledge a Palestinian state at the upcoming UN General Assembly.
The ongoing conflict since October 2023, which ignited following a Hamas-led assault on Israel, has seen appalling casualty figures, with the Hamas-run health ministry reporting over 60,000 deaths, including thousands of children and women.
