At a press briefing in Singapore on Monday, officials from Singapore’s Ministry of National Development and Malaysia’s Ministry of Economy announced that the Johor‑Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS‑SEZ) has secured $21.8 billion in approved investments for the period from January 2025 to June 2026, marking a significant milestone for the cross‑border partnership.
The joint statement highlighted that the approved investment total amounts to 88.83 billion ringgit, the equivalent of $21.8 billion. About 45 percent of these approved funds—around 40.3 billion ringgit—have already been implemented in qualifying projects.
These projects are linked to 28,755 potential employment opportunities. Of those, 12,796 jobs are associated with projects that have already been implemented, the statement noted. The figures underscore the economic momentum generated by the JS‑SEZ initiative that was created under an agreement signed in January 2025.
The data were presented during the first meeting of the Johor‑Singapore Cooperation Ministerial Committee, held in Singapore. The meeting provided a platform to review progress and reinforce mutual commitments to accelerate development of the zone.
Officials said the JS‑SEZ combines advantageous aspects of both participating nations: Johor’s available land and lower operating costs with Singapore’s expertise in financial services and infrastructure. Together, these elements are designed to attract foreign and domestic investment and foster a collaborative economic environment.
Both Treasury departments reaffirmed their willingness to strengthen bilateral cooperation and accelerate development of the economic zone. The announcement was welcomed by the local business community, which viewed the investment inflows as a catalyst for long‑term growth in the region.
While no direct quotations were released, the joint statement emphasized ongoing support for the JS‑SEZ’s strategic goals. It also called for continued coordination to harness the full potential of the investment pipeline and job creation metrics.
As the zone progresses, both countries expect further inflows and employment opportunities. The collaborative framework will likely guide additional projects that leverage the complementary strengths of Singapore and Johor in the forthcoming years.
