In brief
The desperate situation in Haiti has taken a turn for the worse, with gang threats leading to airport closures and rising chaos across the nation.
In recent days, Haiti has plunged deeper into turmoil as gang violence continues to wreak havoc on daily life. Gang leaders, united under the group “Viv Ansanm,” issued dire threats via social media, promising consequences for any perceived recklessness in the streets. Just 48 hours after these warnings, the situation escalated dramatically with multiple U.S. aircraft being shot at, prompting the closure of Toussaint Louverture International Airport in Port-au-Prince. The FAA has now suspended all U.S. flights to the country for a month, while major airlines like American Airlines have announced they will not return before February.Hospitals and healthcare workers are also facing significant risks, as evidenced by the tragic shooting of Dr. Deborah Pierre, a prominent urologist, who was murdered as she entered her car. Reports detail that her father was also injured in the attack, highlighting the perilous conditions in the capital.Humanitarian efforts have been disrupted as well, with Doctors Without Borders stating their ambulance staff were attacked by a vigilante mob while transporting wounded patients, some of whom were suspected gang affiliates. The overall atmosphere in Port-au-Prince remains one of fear and instability, as residents are increasingly wary of the escalating violence.
