In brief

Bulgarian border police detained 19 people linked to a criminal ring that smuggled migrants through Bulgaria to Western Europe. Charges were filed against three Syrians and one Bulgarian and a spokesperson for the Border Police Directorate General says the operation began in March and used hidden compartments in trucks and vehicles.

Bulgarian border police arrested 19 suspects in Sofia on Tuesday as part of an investigation into a migrant‑smuggling network that has operated since March. The arrests came after a series of coordinated raids on five addresses and two vehicles that were believed to be used by the group to conceal and transport illegal migrants.

The Border Police Directorate General (BPDG) reported that the network had organized the illegal entry of migrants into Bulgaria by using specially constructed concealed compartments in trucks. After the migrants crossed the border, the BPDG said they were housed in rented properties in Sofia before being moved to hidden compartments in cars and trucks destined for Western European countries.

Charges and Detentions

BPDG officials announced that four of the detained individuals—three Syrians and one Bulgarian—were charged and remanded in custody for up to 72 hours. The four charged suspects are the most senior members of the ring, according to the prosecutor’s office supervising the investigation.

One of the Syrian nationals, who BPDG identified as a mastermind, was charged in absentia because he is believed to be hiding outside Bulgaria. The police said that the charges will be pursued once he is apprehended.

Investigative Process

During the operation, officers collected evidence from the five locations and the two vehicles. Witnesses were questioned and a report summarizing the gathered materials was submitted to the supervising prosecutor, the BPDG said. The investigation remains ongoing, with authorities continuing to monitor the network’s activities.

The BPDG said the criminal ring has been active in Bulgaria since March of the same year. The boss of the ring allegedly orchestrated the logistics of the operation, including the placement of contraband and coordination of transportation routes leading to countries beyond Bulgaria’s borders.

Strategic Collaboration

All detentions were carried out under the supervision of the Sofia City Prosecution Office. According to the BPDG, the collaboration between border police and prosecutors was crucial for the successful outcomes of the investigation.

While the network’s full scope is still being determined, the arrests are seen as a significant blow to the smuggling operation. BPDG officials emphasized that further arrests and prosecutions could follow depending on the results of the ongoing inquiry.

At this time, there are no additional statements from the suspects or other involved parties. The investigation will continue as authorities collect and analyze evidence against all 19 detainees.
