Ukrainian Authorities Confirm Bucha Blast as Terrorist Act

An explosion in the town of Bucha, located close to the Ukrainian capital Kyiv, has led to injuries of two police officers, with authorities declaring it a 'terrorist attack'.

The incident unfolded on a residential street in the early hours of Monday, with the first explosion occurring shortly before police officers arrived at the scene. A secondary blast resulted in injuries to the attending officers.

A 21-year-old local resident has been arrested in connection with the events, with authorities stating he was recruited online to carry out the explosions. Sources indicated that the recruitment may have occurred through the online game 'World of Tanks'.

According to Andriy Kravchuk, head of the Kyiv Region Criminal Investigations Directorate, the suspect claimed he was motivated by a financial offer of 25,000 hryvnias (approximately £450 or $570) for each blast.

The security service of Ukraine, the SBU, referred to the suspect as a 'Russian agent', although police have not confirmed any verified ties to Russia. The suspect has reported being blackmailed, alleging that those communicating with him over the internet threatened harm to his family if he failed to comply.

Either you do what we tell you or something happens to your mum, the suspect claimed he was told.

The two police officers injured are expected to recover from their non-life-threatening injuries.

Residents of Bucha reported a loud explosion, initially suspecting a gas leak. A local 21-year-old witness shared, We woke up to a powerful explosion. At first, we thought someone had a gas explosion in their apartment, but it turned out that it wasn't. Eyewitness accounts also noted a palpable shock wave, and emergency services responded quickly to the scene.

This situation follows similar violent incidents across Ukraine, highlighting a growing concern regarding public safety amid the ongoing conflict.
