Russian Strike on Ukraine
On a night that now feels like a trauma in the collective memory of Kyiv residents, the Russian military launched 115 drones and 24 ballistic missiles against Ukraine. Although many of the drones were intercepted by the limited air defence, the barrage of rockets overwhelmed existing systems, leaving a swath of infrastructure destroyed. The attack resulted in 21 deaths and dozens wounded, with the home of 34‑year‑old engineer Anastasiia Dudley being left in ruins. She describes the sky flashing white‑hot against the night as the "scariest night" in the war.
BBC correspondent Dan Johnson visited Dudley's basement after the assault. He filmed smoke filling the rooms, cracked walls, and the emotional reactions of beleaguered neighbours. The footage is a stark reminder of what Ukrainian civilians endure every day.
The Kremlin's continued use of drones and missiles has forced Ukraine to ration its dwindling air defence resources, jeopardising the ability to protect critical assets. The conflict shows no signs of abating, and each evening can bring quiet despair to families across the country.
