US Marine arrested after woman found dead in Okinawa hotel
In the early hours of Saturday, police in Naha City, the capital of Okinawa Prefecture, discovered the body of 39‑year‑old Yagi Anna in a hotel. The victim’s identity was confirmed by Japan’s public broadcaster NHK.
Japanese authorities say 20‑year‑old Devin Jacob Ballard, a U.S. Marine stationed at Marine Corps Air Station Futenma, is being held on suspicion of murder. The U.S. Marine Corps has said it will cooperate with Japanese authorities and offered condolences to the victim’s family.
Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi called the incident “brutal and heinous” and urged the United States to enforce stricter discipline on its personnel. Defence Minister Shinjiro Koizumi said the event “fills me with strong indignation” and that such incidents create anxiety in the local community.
The U.S. Embassy in Tokyo confirmed full cooperation with Japanese police, while Japan’s foreign ministry summoned U.S. Ambassador George Glass to discuss the case. Okinawa Governor Genta Koja reiterated calls for stronger discipline and training to prevent future incidents.
Okinawa hosts several U.S. military bases and tens of thousands of American troops, heightening tensions over incidents involving American personnel.
