In brief

US forces launched a new wave of air strikes on Iranian coastal surveillance and air‑defence sites after two American soldiers were killed in Jordan. Iranian state media reported strikes on Qeshm Island in the Strait of Hormuz, while Washington says it also hit Revolutionary Guard facilities linked to the Jordanian attack. In retaliation, Iran’s army carried out drone strikes on U.S. bases in Kuwait. The escalating violence follows a series of renewed hostilities and a fragile ceasefire that collapsed, raising tensions over U.S. troop safety and the future of the region.

The United States launched another night‑time strike campaign toward coastal surveillance and air‑defence systems in Iran after the killing of two US soldiers in a Jordanian‑based attack, Pentagon officials said.

Centcom confirmed that the strikes hit key Iranian military installations, including those tied to the Revolutionary Guard that carried out the offensive on U.S. forces in Jordan. Tehran’s state media reported that Qeshm Island in the Strait of Hormuz also suffered damage.

The U.S. and Iran have been trading attacks for several days, each side attributing strikes on vital infrastructure. Iran’s army says it retaliated by launching kamikaze drone strikes on two U.S. bases in Kuwait, while U.S. officials say the eighth successive night of attacks was designed to degrade Iran’s influence over commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.

The war’s toll on U.S. forces has now risen to 16, including the recent loss of a navy pilot declared dead earlier this month and the late deaths of two soldiers in Jordan.

Washington’s Secretary of Defence, Pete Hegseth, commemorated the fallen soldiers on X with the message: "Godspeed, heroes. Their sacrifice only stiffens our resolve." He said the deaths further harden U.S. resolve against Iranian aggression.

The two overnight sets of attacks came months after a preliminary victory ceasefire was broken in July, following President Trump’s declaration that the nuclear agreement was "over." The conflict now sees each side targeting the other's key military facilities and commercial shipping lanes.
