The recent mass shooting in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, has left the community in shock and mourning. Jesse Van Rootselaar, the 18-year-old suspect, reportedly had a history of mental health struggles, leading to multiple police visits in the years leading up to the tragic event.

On Tuesday, Van Rootselaar opened fire at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, killing eight individuals, including six children, before taking his own life. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) confirmed that they had previously intervened at the suspect's family home due to concerns over his mental health.

The attack also claimed the lives of the suspect's mother and his 11-year-old step-brother at a nearby residence. Additionally, the shooting left at least 25 others injured, with some currently receiving treatment in critical condition.

Although the suspect was once licensed for firearm possession, it remains unclear how he obtained the weapons used during the attack. Following the incident, Prime Minister Mark Carney announced plans to visit the town in the coming days to address the situation.

In light of the shooting, British Columbia has declared a day of mourning, with flags at half-mast and memorials being established to honor the victims. Residents have been observed supporting one another in their grief, as the small community grapples with the need for answers and the implications of such a tragedy.

Authorities confirm that two firearms were found at the scene. Investigations into the mental health history of the suspect and the circumstances regarding the recovered firearms are ongoing. Meanwhile, the traumatic event is serving as a call for renewed discussions about gun control and mental health services in Canada.
