PORTERVILLE, Calif. (AP) — A man fatally shot a central California sheriff’s deputy Thursday morning as he was being served an eviction notice, prompting a standoff that ended with authorities fatally running him over with a vehicle after he fled the home.

Tulare County deputies were serving the eviction notice to a 60-year-old man in Porterville, about 150 miles northeast of Los Angeles, when he opened fire on them. Porterville is located in California's Central Valley.

The man barricaded himself inside the home with a rifle for several hours. At one point, authorities deployed gas into the home while continuing to face gunfire from the suspect. The standoff concluded around 6 p.m. when the man exited the home and attempted to move through nearby backyards, as stated by Sheriff Mike Boudreaux during an evening news conference.

Boudreaux explained that a Kern County SWAT team drove an armored vehicle into the yard where the suspect was laying on the ground and began firing at them. The SWAT vehicle subsequently ran over the man, resulting in his death.

The sheriff shared that the suspect had failed to pay rent for 35 days and had been anticipating law enforcement's arrival to serve the eviction notice. Boudreaux indicated that the suspect had prepared for their arrival and shot at the officers upon their entrance.

The man’s family attempted to persuade him to surrender peacefully, but their efforts were unsuccessful, according to Boudreaux.

The slain deputy was identified as Detective Randy Hoppert, a veteran of the U.S. Navy, who joined the Tulare County Sheriff’s Department in 2020. Boudreaux expressed his condolences, stating, 'This is senseless.'

Residents of the neighborhood were evacuated, and nearby schools were placed on lockdown as SWAT teams engaged with the suspect. One resident, Miguel Ibarra, expressed disbelief at the situation unfolding in what is typically a calm area.

Boudreaux emphasized the importance of community safety and communication, noting that the police worked diligently to keep residents informed throughout the ordeal.
