STATESVILLE, N.C. — Federal authorities are investigating a tragic plane crash that occurred in North Carolina on Thursday, claiming the lives of all seven individuals aboard, including renowned NASCAR driver Greg Biffle, who was traveling with his wife Cristina and their two children, Ryder and Emma.
The aircraft, identified as a Cessna C550, took off from Statesville Regional Airport shortly after 10 a.m. and struggled to return to the runway amidst unfavorable weather conditions, resulting in a deadly fireball upon impact which has shocked witnesses, including golfers at the nearby Lakewood Golf Club.
Biffle, aged 55, is celebrated for winning more than 50 races across NASCAR’s three series, including notable victories in both the Cup Series and as a team principal. The loss is mourned deeply by the racing community. NASCAR remarked on Biffle's impact and contributions to the sport, highlighting his integrity and commitment.
The plane, registered under a business owned by Biffle, left for Florida shortly after take-off but encountered difficulties shortly after, plunging into a field shortly thereafter. In addition to Biffle and his family, other victims included his friend Craig Wadsworth and two individuals, Dennis and Jack Dutton, who were also on board. The family thanked everyone after the incident, stating, “Each of them meant everything to us, and their absence leaves an immeasurable void.”
