In brief

A lorry struck a microbus on a highway in Giza Governorate, south of Cairo, on Saturday, killing 10 and injuring 24, the Ministry of Health and Population reported. Emergency crews responded with 20 ambulances and hospitals raised alert levels to treat the wounded. Preliminary investigation points to speeding in foggy conditions as a likely cause, underscoring Egypt’s ongoing road safety challenges.

A lorry crashed into a microbus on the Cairo–Haram desert highway in Giza Governorate, south of Egypt’s capital, on Saturday, killing ten people and injuring 24, according to a statement from the Ministry of Health and Population.

The ministry said hospitals near the accident site and in surrounding districts were ordered to raise their alert levels, mobilizing medical staff and equipment to deal with the sudden influx of patients.

The Egyptian Ambulance Authority dispatched 20 ambulances to the scene immediately after the emergency report. 10 of the injured were described as being in unstable condition, while 14 sustained injuries ranging from minor to moderate, the ministry added, noting that the figures were preliminary as follow‑up operations continued.

Emergency Response

Local media reported that the mud‑slick highway, which was partially obscured by dense fog, became a bottleneck for traffic that day. The authority’s rapid deployment helped transport several casualties to nearby hospitals within a short time, a measure lauded by local health officials as essential during mass casualty incidents.

Security footage captured on the highway shows the lorry accelerating past a speed‑limit sign before colliding with the microbus at an estimated speed of at least 80 km/h. The footage also recorded the brief visibility conditions caused by the fog, supporting preliminary investigations linking the crash to excessive speed under poor visibility.

Road Safety in Egypt

Road accidents in Egypt have claimed thousands of lives annually, with speeding, traffic violations, and substandard road conditions cited as major contributors. In recent years, the government has embarked on extensive road‑network upgrades, aiming to improve traffic flow and enhance safety features such as better signage and lane markings.

Despite these efforts, incidents like the Giza crash highlight ongoing challenges. The Ministry of Health and Population’s statement reiterated a commitment to reviewing enforcement of speed limits and enhancing driver education, particularly during inclement weather.

Residents along the route have expressed concern that fog‑related incidents remain frequent during the winter months. Civil engineering experts interviewed by the newspaper suggest that additional fog detection systems and variable message signs could reduce the risk of similar accidents.

While the immediate medical response managed to stabilize many of the injured, the death toll remains high, and investigators continue to examine the precise conditions that led to the collision. The Ministry emphasized that preliminary findings point to a combination of excessive speed and limited visibility, but stated that no firm conclusion had been reached.

As the investigation proceeds, authorities urge motorists to exercise caution, adhere to posted speed limits, and remain vigilant in adverse weather conditions. The incident has sparked renewed calls for stricter enforcement and improved infrastructure on Cairo’s southern highways.
