Tragic Boat Capsizing in Sudan Claims at Least 21 Lives
At least 21 people have died after a passenger boat sank in River Nile state in northern Sudan, according to the Sudan Doctors Network.
The boat was traveling between the villages of Tayba al-Khawad and Deim al-Qarai, carrying nearly 30 passengers, including women, elderly individuals, and children. Eyewitnesses indicate that the vessel capsized due to high waves on Wednesday evening in the Shendi area.
Authorities confirmed the recovery of 21 bodies, while Dr. Mohamed Faisal Hassan, spokesperson for the network, reported that six individuals survived the incident. Rescue teams continue their efforts amid fears that more bodies may yet be discovered.
Local health groups have called for the deployment of specialized rescue teams and equipment to enhance search operations, stressing the necessity of implementing safety measures for river transport to prevent such tragedies.
This incident highlights the ongoing fragility of transport methods along the Nile, particularly the absence of basic safety regulations, as Dr. Hassan noted that many boats are privately owned and lack proper oversight.
As Sudan grapples with a brutal conflict that erupted in April 2023, sea and river travel remains perilous, with traditional boats often serving as the primary mode of transportation in rural areas due to the scarcity of bridges.
While River Nile State has largely avoided frontline fighting, instability continues to impact resources and infrastructure across the nation.
